Tacoma's Metal-Urge to galvanize regional arts community
No, it's not a reunion of 1980s bands with big hair. Metal-Urge is an arts event that will forge the talents of more than 100 metal artists at 24 downtown Tacoma venues.
Presented June 6-September 20, Metal-Urge will coincide with two major metal art-oriented exhibits at the Tacoma Arts Museum (TAM), "Ornament as Art" and "Loud Bones." It will offer additional exhibits, workshops, festivals and more.
"We want Metal-Urge to attract people to the South Sound's downtown like magnets to metal," said Amy McBride City of Tacoma Arts Administrator. "Puget Sound has become known for its work in metal arts, and Metal Urge combines the talents of many of these artists so that visitors will experience the very best and most unique metal work."
To create this event, in March, the Tacoma Arts Commission issued an open call to jewelry and metal/mixed media artists to participate in various exhibits, which local gallery owners will host. Each participating gallery will exhibit its own metal-related work, choose work from the call to entries to exhibit, or show a combination of the work.
Visitors can intermingle with Metal-Urge at many local galleries and other entities that promote the arts, including American Art Company, BKB and Company, Children's Museum of Tacoma, Fulcrum Gallery, Gallery Madera, Grand Cinema, Grand Impromptu Gallery, Hotel Murano, Jasminka, LeRoy Jewelers, Mineral, Museum of Glass store, Proctor Art Gallery, Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma Art Place, Tacoma Public Library Handforth Gallery, The Art Stop, The Bead Factory, The Bronze Works, The Robert Daniel Gallery, Two Vaults Studio Gallery, UW-T Gallery, Washington State History Museum, and William Traver Gallery.
