Just ran across what seems to be several variations on a name when
looking for a refurbished charger/inverter. One is Xantrex/Heart/Freedom
and the other is Xantrex/Trace.
Is there a difference between the two?

Yes. Xantrex bought both Heart Inverter and Trace Inverters. They also
market the Prosine line and the Xantrex MS2000 Sine Wave Inverter/Charger.
Heart is a modified sine wave line. Prosine is a high frequency sine wave
line as is the MS2000. However, the Xantrex company stinks.
They have their designs produced in China and episodically are out of stock.
Therefore, Patrick Gerety (formerly of Willard) can't get his warranty
honored as they have no replacements in stock. You see, they don't really do
repairs.
You may wish to look a the Dutch Victron or the Magnum line which is made by
the former principals of Heart. Both are available as either modified or
true sine wave.

Or Outback Power Systems inverters, which are made by the former
engineers at Trace:

I agree, avoid Xantrex like the plague.

Brother-in-law reports that the CTC store in Prince George is dumping all
their Xantrex product at fire sale prices.
He was told by a store clerk that CTC is no longer willing to put up with
the "no repair" policy with Xantrex product.
So much for the bright ideas by some MBAs with no real world experience.
When will they learn?
