Cross Posting ( was RE: TWL: Re: lv-ab: RE: Halyards - was Installing an anemometer)

Mel (and others),

Seeing sudden and unexplained "old" subjects is sometimes a consequence of
something that I abhor, cross posting.  I subscribe to two lists, the TWL
and the LAL and remember the thread well.  I think the subject came up on
the LAL but email you commented upon came up on was posted to both
(cross-posted).  The posting was a tongue-in-cheek comment, I think.

The reason I abhor cross postings is that some people routinely post the
same questions to several different lists (and sometimes they do this in
newsgroups too).  I don't know of any way of filtering this sort of
unintentional Spam out, so you just have to look at each message and delete
as appropriate.

I hate excessive rules but how about a new 'guideline' stating that TWL
people should not cross post?  I doubt that this would not eliminate the
problem but it would certainly reduce it, as I believe that most people will
not intentionally violate guidelines.

LAL

What in the world is the "LAL" never heard of it, but maybe would be
interested?

George,

Sorry for the hieroglyphics.  I thought everyone on the TWL knew about the
LAL.  LAL is Live-Aboard List.  live-aboard@crux.astro.utoronto.ca.  This is
a very old email list (much older than TWL) that caters to live aboards.
Most of the listees are, I think, sailors.  I'm sure that many of the TWL
members are also LAL members, as I've seen some of the same names popping up
there.

I have continuously subscribed to TWL nearly since its inception and have
subscribed to LAL off and on for years.  While there is some topic overlap,
usually the two have different content.  And, more importantly to my
subject, there has been mercifully little cross posting.  Lately there has
been some, and that is what I hope to nip in the bud with my suggestion.

I will forward to you in a private email the welcome message from the LAL.

Best,
Maurice
