'lo All,
My Albin 43 has stainless steel Aqua-Lift type mufflers. They apparently were
made in Taiwan and are original equipment on the boat. They are quite large,
about 22" long, 10" wide and 12" high, they have side input and top output
for 3.5" hoses. Unfortunately, they are also starting to rust, with a few
very small seepage-type leaks.
I will possibly (probably) have them refurbished, but first, was wondering if
anyone knows of manufacturers who make mufflers of this size and type. The
mufflers I have found on the internet that have 3.5" hose size (which is the
output hose size for the turbo) are rated at only 75 HP for diesel engines,
not for the 210 HP diesel engines like I have. I have not noticed any
appreciable back pressure from the hose size as evidenced when at WOT under
load. I don't know why the mufflers for 3.5" hoses are rated at only 75 HP,
unless the design of those specific mufflers create excessive back pressure.
Before I invest in refurbishment or replacement with locally fabricated ones,
I want to see what else may be available.
I would prefer to replace the metal ones with fiberglass, as the metal will
only continue to rust, since they are obviously prone to doing so, at least
at the welds. Then again, I may encapsulate them in fiberglass......
So - Question: What do other Cummins 6BT5.9M 210 HP engines have as aqua-lift
type mufflers (Brand, model number, size, etc., etc., etc.).
Thanks,
Wayne

You have a perfect form to fibre glass. Why not cover the mufflers and your
performance will not change. They are probably only leaking at the welds.

Wayne,
Fiberglass is a remedy.
If you don't want to remove them and it is just seeping at the welds.
You may do what I did several yrs. ago, and it is still holding.
Use SPLASH ZONE it is a 2 part epoxy putty. Just slather it on and
that is it. "Works grt.
Get it an industrial paint store.

Wayne,
I replaced the original Taiwanese metal water lift muffler on my 135
Lehman a few years ago with a Vernay
"Vernalift" muffler. Same type as original, but fiberglass. They had a good
group of different models with inlets at various angles, so I was able to
get a good match to the original - made the installation easy, there's not a
lot of room back there.
I found their web site:
http://centekindustries.com/
It seems they make water lifts for engines up to 2000 HP.
