I bought a copy of Machinery's Handbook on eBay a few weeks back and
finally got around to delving into the "Definition of Screw Threads",
page 1207, for the 22nd edition.
Blunt Start (Blunt End) Thread: "Blunt Start" or "blunt end"
designates the removal of the incomplete thread ... <snip> this is a
feature of parts repeatedly threaded by hand..<snip>. It was formerly
known as the Higbee cut.
If this style of thread ending was renamed before the Internet this
explains the lack of reference sources. I'd expect previous editions
may have a more complete explanation.
