Apparently Plum Island is a NY IBA but will that be enough to prevent development of this much needed migratory stop and bird habitat?  NY State Congress people are working hard to preserve the island as a vital conservation area.

Plum Island

Plum Island beach by Robert Lorenz ©2015
Located just off the coast of Old Saybrook, Plum Island is a stewardship area of national, if not international, conservation importance. Its 840 acres feature wild beach, dune, and bluff. Fierce currents abound with marine life, luring small bait fish, which attract larger predators: striped bass, squid, bluefish, and seals. Whales and sea turtles have also been spotted here. More than 200 bird species, including rare roseate terns and piping plovers, have been observed.

Check out who's concerned about saving Plum Island.

Cannot attend and want to help? Contribute to citizen education and preservation action. Thank you and hope to see you in Old Saybrook!
