Hi All,

Just thought the list may find this interesting.  I stopped by the local
Fastenal store today, and saw a sale flyer on the counter introducing a new
product from Loctite called 'Loctite Insulating & Sealing Wrap.  They didn't
have any in stock, but was told that it is just like Rescue Tape.  I was given
a guestimate price of $7.50 per 20" x 1" roll.

Food for thought,

Good idea. Google shopping says that mostly it is carried by auto racing
supply places and Grainger. Sounds good, but not widely available.

'Lo All,

The specs are quite a bit different between
Lowes' "Magic Wrap" and "Rescue Tape". While it
would probably work the same for most
applications, be aware of each product's working limitations:

Sold as "Magic Wrap" in the plumbing department of Lowes.  16' roll for

7.98.

Lowes  Item #:  26668      Model: 86001

Emergency repair kit on a roll
Works on dirty or wet surfaces, adheres to itself
Repairs cracks, splits, tears
Ideal for plumbing, automotive, electrical repairs
Withstands up to 200 psi
Lasts indefinitely
Works in temperatures from 0 degrees to 200 degrees F

From the Rescue Tape Website:

Property Performance
Operating Temperature Range -850 F to 5000 F / -650 C to 2600 C
Continuous Temperature Range -760 F to 3920 F / -600 C to 2000 C
Cold Brittle Point -850 F / -650 C
Hardness Shore A 50
Tensile Strength (Min.) 700 psi
Elongation (Min.) 300%
Tear Strength (Min.) 85 ppi
Bond Strength (Min.) 2 Lbs
Water Absorption (Max.) 3% By Weight
Dielectric Strength (Min.) 400 volts/mil (8,000 V/20 Mil)

I have never used either product (Rescue Tape nor
Magic Wrap), they sound like very useful products
and was just looking into it. The other
self-vulcanizing silicone products will probably
each have its own set of performance specs, too.
Just know what you are buying and its
limitations. For instance, wrapping a leaky
exhaust elbow could probably be safely done with
Rescue Tape, but would probably result in a
smokey, sooty fire with noxious fumes, if Magic Wrap was used....

Take care and be safe.
