To all - I am an experienced boat operator, engineer, and private pilot. I want to get my '6 pack license' for personal and professional reasons and do not have the schedule flexibility to do the immersion class for a week. Do any of you have recommendations for an online course or equivalent? I self-studied for my pilot's written and did not find it too hard, so it seems I have the aptitude. I understand that the navigation test is the hardest (lots of memorization of lighting, etc) and must be passed at 90% or better to proceed - yes? Thanks for the advice. Jim in New Bern.

Hi Ward,
I just renewed my OUPV for the 3rd time. I always take the class - even to
renew. You can get all the paper work from the CG on their website. Using a
class it took me 6 months to get my original license. There are physicals,
eye exams, CPR and First Aid classes, recommendation letters, citizenship
and birth documents, sea time letters, TWIC identification card and finally
scheduling and taking the exam. The CG exam is more comprehensive than the
schools'. The school is charged with making sure you got the information
pounded into you. The system works.
The paperwork is 3 inches thick when you send it in. Frankly, it's the
hardest part. Everything must be a notorized and/or certifed copy if not the
original.
I know guys have done it on their own. I wish them the best. There are
websites now that help with the identification of lights. The CG posts all
1500 possible NavRules questions on their site. Memorize them. All.
Good luck,

Another alternative is to do weekend classes. Just down the road in
Oriental, NC, World Wide Marine Training offers OUPV/6-Pack classes in-lieu
of the test. See www.wegivethetest.com for schedules, costs, etc.
