Good morning,

I have some updates, some housekeeping, and a last-minute request for your consideration before I disappear for Labor Day weekend.

Updates:

We’ve heard back from all of our award winners other than the folks from the FTC. We’ve also heard from Congressman Roe’s office (who helped us secure the room) that he is going to try to stop by the reception.

Sampling of responses:

Ellen,
I am humbled by this nomination. I have asked our ethics team to review my acceptance and attendance.

Awesome!

Housekeeping

Board meeting — I heard no objections to holding our meeting in the late afternoon on the 26th here in D.C. So please mark your calendar for September 26th at 3:30pm ET. Location TBD.

Award nomination forms — I’ve attached the nomination forms that I forgot to submit. I recommend that we file all the forms somewhere on our shared Google Drive.

You’ll notice that there are actually three forms attached, but you may recall I only nominated two people. That brings me to my request…

Request

As I was going back and forth a few weeks ago with the Center for the Book on possibly holding our event at the LOC, I realized that I had totally forgotten a third nomination that I had wanted to submit: John Cole, who recently left his position as the Center’s director, after a million years. I don’t know how you all feel about a late, additional nomination, but I am begging your indulgence to consider John for an award, for two reasons:

(1) John made sure that ADULT literacy was  included inthe Center’s literacy initiatives, including the LOC’s David Rubenstein-funded literacy awards program, when it would have been just as easy to stick with the kids’ programs. I think that’s worth recognizing.

(2) With John having just stepped down a few months ago, I think it’s important now to reinforce with the LOC and the new Center director the importance of continuing to include adult literacy in their awards program and their other literacy initiatives.

I totally understand if you would prefer that we not do another award this year, but I hope you will consider it. I believe if we wait until next year we lose the strategic value noted above. If you are OK with it, we can formally approve it during our call on Wednesday.
