Well, I would suggest that being able to customize the UI is what can
make communication easy and efficient. A UI you might find intuitive, I
might find clunky and totally unintuitive, and this is precisely why I
have always preferred Firefox and Thunderbird, because its UI has always
been heavily customizable - at least, almost as much as I have ever needed.
Getting off topic here, but if customization is the driving factor there
is something wrong with the defaults. It is really important that it
works well out of the box. (Special features may require customization,
but that's another topic.)

I'm sorry, but I disagree adamantly.
I think that it simply means 'different strokes for different folks'.
You will never, ever come up with a set of defaults that please
everyone, and I think it would be very difficult if possible to even
please 50%.
It is really important that it works well out of the box.
I agree 100% with this at least.
