Hydraulic Steering Update

Last week I asked for and received excellent advice re my steering problems.
Today I checked the system for leaks - none that I could find - but the fluid
level was down about 2 ounces, and topping it up restored the former "feel"
and tightened everything up.

Thanks to all who helped.

Cheers, Garrett

Garrett

What make is your steering?

What did you use to top it up?

I have a SeaStar and I believe the manual says to use their brand but in
an emergency auto transmission fluid is ok.

I suspect most use the auto trans fluid.

Hi John

It's a mix of Capilano and Seastar, and the manual states that both are
manufactured by Teleflex (Canada) Ltd.

The manual lists several brands of hydraulic fluid as well as providing an
SAE(?) spec MIL H5606C. Of course, Seastar Hydarulic Fluid is one of them,
and I found a litre bottle of it at NAPA.

It also states, as you note, that "auto transmission fluid Dexron II may be
used in an emergency", and that "in an extreme emergency any non-toxic,
non-flammable liquid may provide temporqry steering". However, brake fluid
will damage the system and void the warranty.

Cheers, Garrett
