After 55 years of sailing, I decided a year ago to switch, having been convinced that "Old sailors never die; they just go to trawlers". I, too, had no trawler experience, and really had no friends who had trawlers. Living in south Florida, I had plenty of friends with sport fishermen, and had lots of day cruises with them.

Wooden boats require constant attention, especially in warm and humid environments such as Florida, or they get very sick and die. Wood hulls eventually rot, lose strength, and become unsafe. As wood boats go, the Grand Banks were better built than average, but they are still wood.

The ideal arrangement for these jets would be back to back like a bow tie inside a transverse tube (sounding like a bow thruster with a remote pump) but you would still need the tube:-( At this point I got busy and left the concept die the death it truly deserved. My computer could completely die and it wouldn't effect the normal function of the alarm system at all. That's not to say that alarms can't be based on computers. Under the covers, there is a computer there some place. They are solid state embedded devices that are meant to run forever without intervention.

My neighbor had one Webasto fan die over the same four year period. I also bought an auto heater radiator and added a room type air fan, metal cage, about $60 total, with approx 5,000 BTU output...Works fine but is noiser than the Webasto, less than the red dot.

Because I live in the tropics, and because I actually want to cruise my Marine Trader 44 before I die, and not spend the rest of my life at a dock varnishing or oiling teak, I am in the process of undercoating and sealing most of the teak. All of the old varnish has been removed.
