It will allow you to access the nautical charts and all marinas/anchorages/local knowledge without an internet connection. You'll select regions and download them before heading out and then have access to all of the information on your laptop.

An alternative is to truck your boat from say Lake Michigan to an area down river where height will not be a problem, or even better all the way to Mobile, AL thus eliminating the problem all together.
