Solar Cells for Trawlers
Tue, Mar 6, 2007 7:59 PM
You can easily see how expensive solar cells are by going to a solar supplier website of your choice and using their cost and average daily output and figure the costs. You'll also find that there are different types and efficiences....when I last investigated the top of the line (most expensive) seemed to make sense based on higher output.

The other side of the coin is the 137ft Perrini Navi that I did a valve job on one gen and a short block on the other, both with 28,000 hours. Generator loading is an issue as well. They like to be loaded at 80% and no less than 50%. The mega yacht solution is to have 2 smaller sets with auto paralleling or an auto load bank.

The backup battery is a single standard CR2032-style lithium 3V coin cell. To open the case there are 3 torx head screws. One in the bottom center (T10 size) and two at the back plastic feet (T20 size). I started the opening process by prying with a small screwdriver in the cracks between the plastic front panel and the case.

An even better way was to use a Mercury coin cell since they were 1.35 volts and very stable.

The spec sheets are on our website at www.aridbilge.com, then click on Series 2 Specifications on the right column, the third from the top. The series 2 nano is $1465.00 for the single zone version and $1880.00 with two independent intake zones. Way too much money? Not really.
