outbreak of Salmonella among the redpolls
Thu, Feb 28, 2008 6:32 PM
These outbreaks are hard to stop as the redpolls are moving from place to place and thousands can die in one of these outbreaks. It is also helpful to disinfect the ground and with precautions remove the spilled seeds. Keep me posted on this out break. Usually these outbreaks involve several states, and I plan to talk about this on my radio show."

Banding Ospreys
Mon, Jun 30, 2008 1:44 AM
Hi all After another year of banding Osprey chicks in Branford, there was a great deal of discussion with our licensed bander regarding the possibility of using colored bands with numbering/lettering that would be easier to read in the field, thereby allowing a better way to obtain more data instead of waiting for a bird to die to possibly have a band turned

Re: [CT Birds] In response to Duck trap question
Fri, Dec 18, 2009 11:12 AM
Occasionally ducks die in the trap and I don't know why. Apparently there are other duck traps around the state. it's just that from the windows of the Audubon building I can see this trap, so I report the findings about the marsh.

Hawks as predators....
Tue, Jan 5, 2010 3:18 AM
If and when they do not learn how to do this - they then become the prey, for even a weak, or un learned hawk will eventually become prey to others, or often die of starvation. I believe that up to 50% or more of Immature Hawks will not make it to their second year.

memorable Irene moment
Tue, Sep 6, 2011 5:54 PM
My most memorable moment was watching a downy woodpecker taking cover inside a robin nesting box on the same tree waiting for the winds to die down! Still catching up on the 250+ posts to CTBirds from the week. Jo-AnneMansfield Center

Warblers flocking, Parry Sound area
Sat, Aug 17, 2002 8:37 PM
On July 24 and again July 25, I had juvenile Purple Finches die from striking the windows, my only deaths this year. On July 31, I observed a female goldfinch gathering nesting material, right after someone posted that they had started nesting. Today, I rescued an Eastern Massassauga Rattlesnake off the Dillon Road where it was basking.

[Ontbirds]Re- AVIAN BOTULISM.
Fri, Oct 26, 2007 4:43 AM
As said before, if too much toxin is taken in, the bird will die. Some Common Loons and other water birds manage to struggle ashore and avoid drowning but may still become cold, paralysed and stop breathing. What I try to do is catch the affected bird, dry it and keep it safe and warm overnight.
