Re: T&T: Starting Diesel Engines

I've just (2 weeks ago) installed two of these on Island Eagle. My engine weighs about 4000 pounds, so if they can heat that lump of iron they should be just perfect on a little Yanmar. I'll report back in the spring. By the way the main reason I put them on is not for starting (I don't use the boat in the winter) but as a general way of keeping the engine room warm. BTW one small note, I think the oil pans on some Yanmars are made of aluminum, you may want to check yours with a magnet before you buy the heater. I used these on my fuel system and HIGHLY recommend them. Easy to assemble, easy to disassemble, and absolutely leak-free. Re: T&T: Amplepower, was Balmar voltage regulators
Wed, Jan 27, 2010 1:56 PM
"Brent Hodges" writes: >Anyone had much experience with trying to >get tech support from Amplepower? I used Ample for my alternators, regulators and battery monitors. They are a bit eccentric, that's for sure, but beyond that I have only good reports. One of my alternators had a problem after installation, which they happily repaired. The repaired alternator was damage in shipping (the case was cracked if you can believe it) and they replaced it without a questions. None of the other components have shown any problems at all, and I installed them 5 years ago now. When I was considering whether to go with Balmar or Ample, I talked to the owner of Ample. I happened to mention that I liked the look of the nice powdercoating in the Balmars. He immediately snapped that it did look good, but that it cut down the cooling efficiency by over 5% and hence caused the alternators to run hotter. In my book, anyone who values technical performance over the glitz and glitter gets my business every time.
