A lovely trip to the Toronto Islands on Saturday, with good weather bringing out some good species. Right off the Hanlan's point 8:15 ferry, were Cedar Waxwing and SCARLET TANAGER, as well as a few N. Orioles. Warblers seen right here in the shrubs and trees were many Yellows, American Redstart, many Black Throated Greens and Blackburnians, and Chestnut Sided. Following the main path, 2 Blue Gray Gnatcatchers were seen and we saw several Canvasbacks in the Lagoon, and a mystery warbler. Nothing was in the shrubs by the lighthouse, so we carried on towards the little church opposite the Farm. Adding to the warbler count were Magnolia, Yellow rumps, Canadas, a Female Black throated Blue, Wilsons, Black and White and a Common Yellowthroat, as well as more of the warbler spp. we'd already seen. On Saturday Jan 10th, at about 11:30 am in some pretty fierce winds, a Snowy Owl was seen on Cell 1 at the Leslie Street Spit. It was sitting right on the ice, but out of the wind behind a log, and based on the minimal barring, it was likely a male. Shortly after a Gt Horned Owl was seen, just to the west of the Sailing Club Road, just as the road bottoms out after leaving the main road. 3 cottontail rabbits also spotted - on the baselands, sailing club road, and beside Cell 1. Hello, On Saturday April 16th an Osprey was seen at Echo lake, in Lawson's bay, close to Baysville, Ontario. Mostly remarkable because the lake was still frozen. And on Sunday April 17th, a possible Common Loon was sighted at the same lake, in a narrow band of open water that had opened up overnight along the North shore, after a heavy rainfall Saturday. Distance was too great to confirm, but size, colour, profile and behaviour supports the identification. I don't know if either of these are unusually early sightings, but uncommon anyway. After crossing though town and the rock cut, take the first right (Muskoka Rd 51) on Echo Lake road, and follow the signs to Echo lake about 4 km. Hello, yesterday at 6 pm I found a male Red bellied woodpecker, flitting between Oak trees and feeders in a yard in Toronto, calling intermittently. It was in the east end (Beaches), closest main intersection is Queen St. East and Main street. The yard is located at the junction of MacLean Ave (several blocks east of Main street) , and Pine crescent (3 blocks north of Queen St.). The house sits in the broad sweep of Pine Crescent as it climbs a hill, so the yard is fully visible from the street. Thanks, Laura Murray Toronto
