[Ontbirds] Woodcock in Toronto
Fri, Apr 9, 2004 12:48 PM
On Wednesday evening, at about 5:30, on the south side of Danforth Avenue in downtown Toronto, just east of Broadview, I came across a Woodcock, sitting on the sidewalk. An unusual sight indeed! Before I got too close, it flew across the street and hid under a garbage can. I crossed over, but it flew off again, North onEllerbeck St. Another viewer said it had blood on the side of its' head, and that a group of starlings had been harassing it. I walked up the street, hoping to see it, and perhaps take it into the Don Valley, where I assume it had come from, but didn't find it again. Laura Murray, Toronto

[Ontbirds]Fwd: can you post on Ont Birds for me
Thu, May 27, 2004 11:18 PM
I'm forwarding the following from Kevin Seymour: Clay-colored Sparrow in Mount Pleasant Cemetary For three mornings now (Tues-Thurs) a Clay-colored Sparrow has been singing in the same section of Mount Pleasant Cemetary, Section 54. This is the extreme north-east corner of the cemetary. If you stand at the sign (saying Section 54), and look north-east to Bayview Avenue, there are two oaks that it likes to sing from, a large White Oak right on Bayview (the largest tree in the area) and a smaller Red Oak, just west of the White Oak. If you find the sign, and it is singing, you will hear it: three fairly loud buzzy insect-like notes. You can enter the cemetary on foot only from the gate in the middle of the cemetary on Bayview Ave (you can park on Bayview during non-rush hour times), or drive in from the Mt Pleasant entrance and make your way by car to the eastern side and park somewhere. The cemetary is open approximately sunrise to sunset, or about 7 am to 7 pm (maybe earlier and later, the hours shift seasonally). Kevin Seymour

[Ontbirds]Long-eared Owl- Cabbagetown
Sat, Dec 1, 2007 9:42 PM
There is a Long-Eared Owl in the large fir tree in my back yard. We are on Ontario Street between Gerrard and Dundas (We are the 2nd large Fir tree south of Gerrard) . There is a community centre to our south and a alley to our east. Both would be good viewing areas if it sticks around. Cabbagetown is in Toronto. Best, Max Perren
