If it gets cold enough (without power from solar cells, it won't generate enough internal heat to keep warm), it will die. That's probably what happened to Spirit on Mars. It got cold enough during the Martian winter, and with not enough solar power, enough things drifted cold enough that we couldn't get commands in.

Pulse length about 100ns so only some 0.5mJ energy that would die inside the pulse source( this would be the worst case). The 100us repetition rate make a a very small duty cycle of 1/1000 so average power maximum 5W.

Thank you very much.

The die is labelled 'ORBIT B-100'. When I chopped out the dead chip from my FTS-4065A, the bottom was stamped with the word ORBIT. ORBIT Semiconductor works on FPGA to ASIC conversions. It looks like Stanford used Orbit as a fab house. I'm currently measuring my 4065A against my Tbolt.

(If i remember correctly, the cost was around 10kUSD per design and for 20 dies, half of them in QFP, half as nacked die) Attila Kinali -- It is upon moral qualities that a society is ultimately founded.

Re: [time-nuts] UPS for my time rack

He told me that the smaller units with built > in batteries will die if you put large external batteries on them. Years ago, I used to work at a place that would give me all their cast-off computer parts, including old UPS'. I've taken probably opened up about 20 of them, from various manufacturers.

HP Z3801A Internal Power Supply issues
Sun, Jan 31, 2016 2:21 AM
My Z3801A began to die over the last few days. It would work for an hour or two then produce a receiver error and communications problems. Turn it off, let it sit awhile, back on and it would start the survey and then begin to recover. Tonight it finally went dead with high current on the main input .

Re: [time-nuts] HP-105B Battery Replacement?

You can change up the batteries for more runtime, but real cheap UPS will overheat and die. They were not designed for steady state operation. That is the problem with the cheaper APC. They were designed for 5 or 10 mins at max power. Run them for two hours at max power then they overheat and permanently fail.

Re: [time-nuts] COTS cesium standard physics package life

The “operating” case will ultimately kill various parts in the standard that would not die sitting on the shelf. The pumping process *may* extend the life of the tube….. What the pumping process *will* do is reduce the amount of time needed to bring the unit back to life after it has been on the shelf for 30 years.
