First of all, it provides an easy check if the shape is "complete", Consider my 2D example in 3D: This does not define a solid as the outside edges are traversed only once. Computationally easy check.

Openscad is a fairly pure functional programming language, which makes it somewhat hard to get used to if all you have used is procedural languages.

I thought that you were giving generic advice to all of us about where to locate a discharge pump. I did not think that you were still answering the question about the tank with the pickup tube on the top. My bad. You described where to locate a pump and then said: " An easy mod to do on most boats."
