Re: [time-nuts] Maser (oil diffusion rough pumps)

Oil pumps just don't hack it for UHV. If you are going to use oil pumps for almost anything serious you must use an LN2 trap. In a He Leak Detector, for example, an oil system is often used. BTW, Varian specifically say not to use Silicone oils as they permanently destroy the mass specs. Do you have an RGA on your MASER?

A routine hack. When I said "handle" I meant get it from a sealed glass vial into another place, in a controlled fashion. FWIW, -John =============== >> I think any pure alkali metal basically has to be handled in a good >> vacuum >> and moved around by distillation.

Hi … and since NTP is open source, doing the hack is not dependent on getting a new firmware image for the GPS. Communicating with the Lucent KS-24361
Mon, Nov 10, 2014 5:15 PM
I had been unsuccessful communicating with these units using the RS232 to RS422 cable hack that Stewart Cobb described in his original post (https://www.febo.com/pipermail/time-nuts/2014-October/087274.html). I was able to see, via a scope, the data coming out of the REF 1 unit, but it was never picked up on the PC.

Re: [time-nuts] Lucent KS-24361 RS-422 interface pinout
Tue, Dec 2, 2014 2:17 AM
Rather than try the hack suggested by Stu I bought a USB to RS-422 interface cable, a Startech ICUSB422. It has a DB-9P which plugs directly into the DIAG connector BUT on comparing it's pinout to the "hack cable" suggested by Stu, it seems that they really don't line up correctly.
