    You could also have used:<br>

    Which is a shorthand for "source".<br>
    <br>
    In Linux, environment variables propagate downwards in the process
    tree.  So if you have a shell script that sets environment
    variables, it must run<br>
      in the context of the current shell invocation--hence the "." or
    "source" magic.  Otherwise, the shell will dutifully spawn a new
    shell, and execute your<br>
      shell script in a new process, which will not have the desired
    effect.<br>

    This is why one often sets environment variables for stuff that you
    use all the time in your .bashrc, since this is run on startup of
    every login shell<br>
      instance, thus guaranteeing those settings will propagate
    downwards through any process you start from such a shell (such as
    is created in<br>
      a terminal window).<br>
